He attended the design classes at the South Kensington schools from 1867-1873 with great success. He became one of the foremost modern painters of landscape and of peasant life, influenced to a certain extent by the impressionists with whom he shared the view that light is the real subject of landscape art. His pictures excel in rendering the appearance of things under flecking outdoor sunlight, or in the shady shelter of a barn or stable. His \u003Cu\u003EGirl at the Gate\u003C/u\u003E was acquired for the nation by the \u003Ca class=\u0022link\u0022 href=\u0022http://www.speel.demon.co.uk/other/chantrey.htm\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EChantrey Trustees\u003C/a\u003E and is now at the National Gallery of British Art (\u003Ca class=\u0022link\u0022 href=\u0022http://www.tate.org.uk/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ETate Gallery\u003C/a\u003E).
