Atelier Dualis is a small independent educational institution located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It is a novel approach to arts education combining the fine art training program developed by renowned trompe l'oeil artist, Anthony Waichulis with a supplemental career preparatory business curriculum. In addition to learning the fundamentals of painting and drawing, students will learn to market and promote themselves to further close the gap between art education and professional career. It is their goal to produce artists who are not only confident in their artistic vision and technical capabilites, but also aware of the creative power of business and equipped with the tools to shape the art world of tomorrow. The school was founded in 2012 by Erin Anderson, who was a student of Anthony Waichulis and has won ARC scholarship awards in the past. She has placed well in the ARC International Salons attaining an Honorable Mention in 2010/2011 and winning third place in the Drawing Category in the 2011/2012 ARC International Salon.
Studio Art Training Program
The Studio's art training curriculum consists of exercises that explore the four basic forms into which all other forms can be broken down:- the sphere
- the cylinder
- the cone
- and the cube
Each of these forms are dissected and theoretically explored through repetitious exercises in both charcoal and oil paint. The goal of the exercises is to both give the apprentice an understanding of how these forms interact in a theoretical environment with a theoretical light source and to develop muscle memory in rendering subtle gradations for light and shadow changes. Studies from life are also incorporated into the program through required still life drawings used as a final test of their understanding of light and form.
In conjunction with their technical training, apprentices are encouraged to develop their personal artistic philosophies (or "brands") through creative projects to be completed throughout the program. There will be five major drawings required, but apprentices are more than welcome to do as many as they want.
Painting and drawing of still lives and the figure are both encouraged and the subject matter of independent apprentice pieces is up to the apprentice as it is important to exercise ones own artistic visions. Although the base program does not include drawing from live models at this time, Atelier Dualis does have separate workshops for life drawing from nude models, check their website or contact Erin Anderson at the e-mail address above for more details.
Business Training Program
In such a competitive industry it is essential to have an understanding of business and marketing to differentiate and remain viable. Atelier Dualis' business program begins with addressing branding concepts as they apply to artists and their own personal mission statements. Throughout the program, apprentices are introduced to:- Marketing practices
- Principles of Entrepreneurship
- Finance
- and Accounting
To apply their business education in a real-life scenario, apprentices have full access to a beautiful storefront gallery space in downtown Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In this scenario, students are able to work as a team, come up with unique marketing strategies, promote themselves, organize openings and events, etc. Not only does this give apprentices practical experience in self-promotion and selling, but also provides an opportunity to establish a price base and through continued sales, learn how to adjust/raise their prices throughout their careers.
Additionally, students will be given the freedom to plan their own events, offer their own classes or workshops and get personalized intruction and guidance in creating business plans for their own future aspirations.
