Mission Statement
BACAA is a recognized institution offering Workshops with eminent teachers of the Contemporary Classical Realist Tradition and weekly Art Classes for artists of all abilities who desire to study drawing and painting in this tradition. We are located 30 minutes south of San Francisco, CA on the mid Peninsula. The BACAA studio has 25-foot ceilings and high north facing windows, which provide the ideal environment for classical study.
Linda Dulaney, Founder of BACAA, is a lifelong artist whose most influential teachers were Ted Seth Jacobs, Tony Ryder, and Michael Grimaldi. She manifested her desire to bring a school to life in the San Francisco Bay Area, based on the ateliers of 19th century Paris. Starting in the mid 1990s, Linda developed a clear understanding of the style and type of instruction she wanted in an atelier. In 2001, Linda hosted the first workshop with Anthony Ryder in the San Francisco Bay Area. This grew into the Bay Area Classical Artist Atelier providing a unique blend of classical art classes and workshops focused on the use of live models and natural light.
For the last ten years, BACAA has hosted the best Contemporary Classical Artists of our time, such as master artist Ted Seth Jacobs, Michael Grimaldi, Dan Thompson, Jon deMartin, Juliette Aristides, and many more, for these intensive workshops and continues the traditional approach to drawing and painting.
BACAA developed a relationship with the realist community in the United States as well as in Europe and now hosts about ten master workshops per year in addition to weekly classes. Recently, the school has launched a Master Sculpting program and Sight Size Method Drawing and Painting program with Alicia Ponzio and Justin Hess.
BACAA is committed to upholding the highest standards of art instruction by providing opportunities for all artists and students including:
- Drawing and painting workshops taught by master artists
- Classes for drawing and painting from casts, self-portraits and live models with long pose
- Sculpture Classes
- Seminars and visits of Galleries and museums to create an understanding of these art traditions and why they are indispensable
- An intimate atelier setting based on the methods and procedures of world renowned artists, mentors Anthony Ryder and Master Artist Ted Seth Jacobs
- A supportive, collaborative, inspiring, and student-friendly learning environment
This setting is perfect for students to practice atelier traditions and develop skill, fostering artists to carry on the realist tradition and further the tradition as it pertains to contemporary society.Classes
We offer long pose classes and the options to receive instruction or the opportunity to work indepedently. Students will learn about structure, proportion and how to correctly block in, contour and model the form. Students will Learn techniques of how to see and convey light effects on the form.
During the weekly classes instructor Linda Dulaney will draw alongside the students and offer demos and critiques throughout the sessions. She teaches the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday daytime classes and the private sessions. The techniques that she teaches help students develop their artwork, conveying the natural organic forms and science of light on the form. Students will have the opportunity to work methodicaly through a process to compare what they see from nature.
We work only from life from live models or still life. We do not use photographs as references in our sessions with exception to master copies.
