This painting was inspired by the medieval allegory 'Psychomachia', by the Latin poet Prudentius, and is one of an eventual series of seven. It represents the conflict of the vices and virtues in a battle to control the soul. I designed a snakes and ladders game around the outside of the panel to represent the souls journey through this battlefield. The centre of the panel I reserved for the personification of the virtues and intended the appearance of the panel to have the essence of a medieval illuminated manuscript.
