Mother by Edith Dormandy

I drew this portrait of my mother as the pendant to my self portrait. We are often told we look alike and my identity is entirely bound up in hers. I wanted to capture her expression when she is listening hard to what someone is saying. An intensely intelligent person, you can be sure she will dig out any humbug. She is also a kind, gentle and loving person, but I wanted to challenge the stereotypical image of the artist's mother as merely domestic and caring. As a pair, I hope it shows us as two intelligent women, ready to face the world!
