“I am very suspicious that in St. Augustine, FL, there is an artist living in every household. They try to decorate their front yard with a passion. My job is to catch the striking moment with my brushes. It was an early summer. I immediately thought about the Rembrandt lighting when I saw the morning light. I drew the dappled shadows on a very ordinary Boston fern in a common white pot with blues stripes. It turned ordinary to the extraordinary, yet vanished instantly. It matched the concept of my work. My paintings are all about investigating the impermanence of images, thoughts, realities and dreams. The hard part of this painting was to deal with the background. I tried to get the right value and tone to set off the main subjects.” – Xi Guo
