Studios at Crescent Pond is a place where lovers of art and nature meet.  For nearly a quarter century, Dr. Richard Whitney and his artist wife, Sandy Sherman, have welcomed students, artists, and art lovers from around the world.  Their studios are located at the end of a dirt road with a beautiful beaver pond and access to thousands of acres of forest.  Occasionally a moose, bobcat or bear will come to their pond and keep their resident beavers and dozens of ducks company. Richard's studio is located upstairs in a large barn which also serves as their gallery and classroom.  Sandy's studio is located in a smaller building nearer their pond.

Richard is the author of Painting the Visual Impression which has been read by artists and art lovers worldwide. Daniel Greene, N.A. has said "it is on par with the famous Art Spirit and is destined to be a classic book on portraiture and painting." For almost half a century Richard has taught hundreds of students and conducted workshops and lectures throughout the US.  He designs his teaching around the constraints of time and money for each student.  Some have studied with him once a week for several years, others for an occasional  2 or 3 day private workshop, still others receive critiques from him only over the internet, such as one artist in Sri Lanka.  Richard also gives illustrated talks on landscape and portrait painting for schools and organizations in the area and teaches portrait workshops for art organizations in other parts of the country.
