The Michelangelo Project™

Debuts National at Lausanne Collegiate School

<align="left">Within its rigorous college preparatory program, The Michelangelo Project™ is now offered to Lausanne's 7th - 12th grade students. Lausanne Collegiate School is the first school in the nation to offer this program which introduces a European Atelier long term curriculum. Kathryn Manzo, a realist painter who specializes in commissioned portrait, still life, and landscape paintings, has created this program to train young artists in the craft of drawing and painting to the highest technical level possible. It focuses on the development of keen observation with a critical eye, and the necessary methods to draw or paint that which is observed.

Students study in the centuries-proven classical tradition of past masters. The education is similar to a master-apprentice education, and is the same training pursued by artists William Merritt Chase, John Singer Sargent, Edgar Degas, William-Adolphe Bouguereau and James McNeill Whistler, just to name a few. School day workshops offer a sampling of techniques, and an after school program is available for 7th - 12th graders who are seeking serious in-depth study. The training is individualized in nature and addresses the unique needs of each artist. Ms. Manzo users this analogy, "Just as studying in a music conservatory allows a student to focus on the study of one instrument more than a general core curriculum music class, The Michelangelo Project™ allows a student to focus extensively on classical drawing and painting more than a core curriculum art class. Both are necessary for artistic development."

In its initial fall semester phase The Michelangelo Project™ was offered exclusively to Lausanne students. With that session successfully launced and in an effort to share this unique program with the community, the spring session will be open to all area 7th - 12th grade students who are interested in serious art study. Students will be accepted on a first come/first served basis until all openings are filled. The ten week term begins January 13. For more information, check out the website www.lausanneschool.com/michelangelo or contact Ms. Manzo at 474-1032.

Ms. Manzo is well respected amongst her peers and connoisseus for her exceptional technique and knowledge about the craft of painting. Her articles have appeared in professional publications. In New York City, she taught at Parsons School of Design, as well as privately, and currently teachers in Memphis, TN where she is a founder of The Contemporary Realist Academy. She received a BFA in design from FIT/SUNY, studied science at Hunter College/CUNY, and studied painting in Franced at the Ecole Albert Defois and in New York City at The Art Students' League, The New York Academy of Art and the Atelier Aviano. Her studio is located in Memphis, TN. Her academic lineage can be traced back to Bouguereau and Michelangelo himself.
