With the attack on his famous 95 theses against the indulgence on October 31, 1517 began a conflict far beyond Luther's life span between the Roman church and the Protestant movement. This conflict was supported by a hitherto unknown flood of images. These were mostly graphic representations, image polemics and portraits, which appeared in more or less high editions. Worshiped by his followers and reviled against his enemies, Luther himself became one of the most frequently portrayed persons of his time.
