During this intensive workshop, students work six hours daily from a high quality digital reproduction to reproduce a classical portrait and learn the specialized techniques for copying master works. The course will begin with a technical demonstration of imprimatura preparation, mixing colors, organizing the palette, and preparing mediums. During the sessions, discussions will include master drawing techniques, tracing and copying. A variety of lighting situations will be analyzed and the ways in which light reveals form are studied. Brush strokes, blending, use of media, palette preparation and painting posture are all taught as well as value scales. Students learn about different techniques and copy their reproductions using the principles described above.

Students will tour the great painting collection of the Palatine Gallery at the Pitti Palace with course instructor, Igor Naskalov, and resident Art Historian, Joan Reifsnyder.
