PLEIN AIR GRAND MARAIS has been an annual tradition bringing outdoor painters to Lake Superior's North Shore and the community of Grand Marais for fifteen years.  Starting in 2018, Outdoor Painters of Minnesota will collaborate with the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery in Grand Marais to continue the event and expand it to include activities engaging painters, visitors, and the community of Grand Marais.

Outdoor Painters of Minnesota is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage and promote painting directly from nature. OPM provides regular opportunities for members to paint together, looks for ways to develop member skills and reputation, and seeks to raise awareness of the beauty found in nature through outdoor painting.

The Cook County Historical Society operates the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery in Grand Marais, Minnesota. The nonprofit Art Gallery features local, regional, and national artists in revolving exhibits, as well as featuring a permanent collection of original art by Anna C. Johnson, an early 1900s artist.
