The MacAvoy Foundation

Realism Today and Realism Live

The MacAvoy Foundation is dedicated to the creation and preservation of beauty and history. It was founded to educate the public and encourage historic literacy, stewardship of the natural world, appreciation of great art, and belief in Western civic virtues. The foundation supports a variety of organizations that uphold classical virtues in learning and masterful techniques in the arts.

The Foundation is currently developing a home-study curriculum inspired by classical education and designed for students in elementary school through university. It includes lessons on great works, key historical figures, and significant events. Through this program, the Foundation aims to shape imagination and character while preserving knowledge of Western civic virtues, events, and individuals.

The Foundation also provides philanthropic support to preserve historic objects — whether items, historic buildings, or significant works of art or writing — and foster public access, knowledge, and enjoyment thereof. Their goal is to curate a network and collection that allows people to acknowledge, appreciate, and remember the cultural milestones upon which Western freedoms were built.

Additionally, the Foundation seeks to foster a revival and flourishing of great art by encouraging artists to create great new works that evoke timeless, universal themes while reflecting the spirit of the current age. In service of this mission, the Foundation is establishing or partnering on various awards, grants, and residencies that encourage artists to undertake ambitious creative projects free of financial duress and perverse incentives that currently plague the art world.

Through its varied initiatives, the MacAvoy Foundation will instill a deep appreciation and understanding of "the True and the Beautiful." For more information, please visit us at macavoy.org.

Watts Atelier of the Arts

Sponsored by Watts Atelier of the Arts

Watts Atelier of the Arts, founded 33 years ago by Jeffrey R. Watts and his wife Krista Watts, is located in the sleepy beach community of Encinitas, California. It is modeled after nineteenth-century European Ateliers with a focus on the Frank Reilly method of comparative measurement. At Watts Atelier, we believe the path to prosperity is paved with superior knowledge, a strong work ethic and a clear focus of purpose. The emphasis of the training employed at the Atelier is built upon an exceptionally strong foundational skill base to help students work toward the upper levels mastery. The Atelier brings together students of all ages and skill levels from professional to novice in an environment of visual learning that is highly structured with a low student-to-teacher ratio.

11 years ago they launched Watts Atelier Online; a learning platform that brings the curriculum of the school online. With over 1500 hours of content the program draws upon the 32 year curriculum of the brick and mortar. This helps to create a truly unique online experience that helps the student to move from beginner to a professional level in a user friendly manner. With the addition of many Master Classes the student can take their skills even further in design, color and illustration as they prepare their portfolios to enter the profession of their choice.

Jeff and his select team of dedicated instructors, who all received their primary training in the Watts Method, work as both teachers and full-time professional fine-artists, illustrators and conceptual artists. Whether it is through online or the brick and mortar school, you will be able to learn from their many years of experience in the professional field. One of the first schools to be accredited by Art Renewal Center, Watts Atelier is recognized the world over as one of the truly great destinations for learning the pure craft of drawing and painting in the traditional lineage of the great art institutions of the past. They strive to uphold their motto, "Preserving the Tradition of the Masters."

The Florence Academy of Art

The Florence Academy of Art, one of the Art Renewal Center's first approved schools, has been advancing the training and techniques of classical painting and sculpture for over 30 years. It continues to form highly skilled artists who are important members of the Realist Art movement of the 21st century. The Florence Academy recognizes the importance of the ARC Salon as an international showcase for classically trained artists through its online and live exhibitions. The time-tested curriculum, with its focus on drawing (particularly of the human figure), is designed to build skills progressively thus allowing students at any level to develop their ability to represent a subject from life and gain confidence in expressing their artistic voice and vision. Princeton Academy of Art

Sponsored by Princeton Academy of Art

Princeton Academy of Art is located in the heart of Princeton, NJ. Our institution presents a unique educational experience in the European Classical tradition through merging the methods of classical atelier education and the Russian academic approach. Following in these traditions, instruction is a focused immersion into human anatomy, perspective, and tactile approaches to analyzing form. By rigorously studying these methods alongside concrete principles of value, color and composition, students are able to traverse various media and techniques to interpret the world around them in a way that suits their temperament and vision.

Our guiding principle is a belief that the study of visual art is a practice of communication and support. In the face of the infinite number of pitfalls and discoveries that artists will encounter in their careers, this foundation ensures that they will learn to create connections with not only their peers but the broader artistic community. Our instructors are exhibiting artists who configure each class to enhance and encourage the artistic growth of our students. They are not only instructors, but mentors and professional connections as well.

Our institution aims to bring philosophical, aesthetic, and technical research back into the contemporary artists practice. Through connections with philosophers, poets, art historians and scientists, we are continuing the humanist dialog that was born during the age of the Renaissance and faded during the 20th century due to fragmentation between disciplines of higher education.

Angel Academy of Art

Sponsored by the Angel Academy of Art

Founded in 1997, the Angel Academy of Art, Florence, is considered one of the best of the 21st-century academies and ateliers that specialize in the teaching of representational painting. Most of the alumni who have graduated from its full-time three-year programme have gone on to become successful professional artists, and several are now Living Masters in the ARC's Living Masters list. The Angel Academy of Art, Florence, is proud to sponsor the Teens Category in the immensely important International ARC Annual Salon.

The Angel Academy uses sight-size to teach basic rendering skills — drawing and painting from the plaster cast and from still life — but uses the 19th-century academy method of comparative measurement when instructing from the live figure model. This teaches the student to interpret the model for artistic expression, increasing the viewer’s emotional response, while maintaining the illusion of Naturalism. This is done through a thorough understanding of human structure, proportion and gesture; gesture and composition are explained in the lectures and emphasized in the students' third year of study. Anatomy and Morphology, Portraiture, and Pictorial Composition are also included in the syllabus.

The Angel Academy of Art, Florence, is recognized as an ARC Approved Atelier.
