Longing by Gustavo Ramos

“Longing” is an exploration of juxtaposing organic curvilinear qualities with man-made modern design. The architectural lines in the painting aim at the head of the figure, making it the focal point, all the while creating a believable atmosphere. These same compositional lines also serve as dividers, establishing 4 distinct and unbalanced spaces, each with their individual texture. The figure’s torso disrupts this vertical/horizontal rhythm, with the back being inclined diagonally one way, and the stripes on the shirt pointing diagonally the other way. The head resting on the figure’s crossed arms provides a place for reflection and refuge from the other design elements in “Longing”.
