This drawing is of my daughter (Casey) that originated with a photo I took of her in my studio. The hat she is wearing is of an unknown origin, and to me that gives her appearance and her cultural identity an unknown origin as well. The title, "Casey, Origins", is more of a question. For many cultures, a connection to their past gives purpose and pride but for many Americans a specific cultural identity doesn’t exist. Traditions of our ancestors are lost and replaced with popular culture which is fleeting and temporary. I see a sense of weariness and disconnection in her face, a feeling of longing and searching for identity and her roots.
