Kato was a tiger I went backwards and forwards to photograph in the middle of winter. I wanted a certain lighting, which created shadows and allowed me to play around with the edges. The painting of Kato was a bit experimental for me recently inspired by the techniques of the old masters. I worked on it over many layers starting with just raw umber on a toned ground. I usually just paint on the white of the surface so this was all a little new to me and I made many mistakes and learnt a lot from the process.
