Laia Pla, Badalona 1973 (Barcelona, Spain)
I studied both, sculpture, at the Escuela de Arte y Superior Pau gargallo in Badalona and fashion design, at the Escuela Llotja in Barcelona.
After some time in the fashion world, I fell in love with sculpture.Currently I mix the two disciplines as the basis of my work, "textile sculptures", for which i use fabrics, threads, and leathers.
Using textiles as the basic element, I achieve the aesthetic and expresiveness I am looking for in my sculptures. The great diversity of textures that I can use gives me infinite possibilities of finishes and shapes.
I essentially work with the human body as I am a figurative artist. I invent, creating some characters and reinterpreting others.
My work begins in a classic way, I make a clay model, then, I make the mold, and finally I create the piece combining textile fibers with other materials such as paper, cardboard, resin, plaster, cement, and anything else that comes into my head.
I have participated in numerous group exhibitions in San Vigilio (Italy), Estonia, Huesca, Murcia, Girona, Barcelona, Tarragona, Badalona, Cornellà de Llobregat, Granollers,Mataró, Sitges, Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, Torredembarra and Menorca.
I have exhibited at the Museum of Music in Barcelona, the Natural Science Museum in Granollers and the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona where one of my sculptures is included in the museum's permanet collection.
