As a young man Egg was a member of the artistic group 'The Clique,' whose other members included Richard Dadd and W P Frith. He initially painted historical pictures. Egg was one of the few Royal Academicians who was sympathetic to, and was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, and under their influence turned to painting pictures of modern life. Personally he was an easy-going benign individual.

Throughout his life Egg suffered from poor health, and he died aged only forty seven. He was a highly competent and perceptive artist, and in the 'Travelling Companions,' painted in the last year of his life he produced one of the most significant artistic images of his day.
