Alex Callaway is an award-winning contemporary realist painter based in the UK. His early career was spent developing a distinct brand of Pop Surrealism whilst working as an illustrator.

Describing his work as 'observational realism' Alex paints directly from life in natural light and his still lifes are intended to be as much an immersive, contemplative experience as they are a celebration and appreciation of our world. He has always been inspired by the work of the Old Masters and equally enjoys the skill and ideas of contemporary artists working today. In essence his paintings attempt to examine the character and physical presence of natural phenomena, and celebrate the beauty found within the sublime and transitory nature of life.

"With painting there are many aspects that capture the imagination and ignite a sense of wonder. In particular for me are the alchemical possibilities. Simple commonplace objects can take on greater significance, their humble presence perceived within a larger unknowable context. The objects represent themselves and yet so much more; the subject becomes a portal and we are transported to where beauty and meaning are encountered within."

A finalist in the prestigious 2018 Columbia Threadneedle Prize, Alex also received an Arcadia Contemporary Award from the 12th International ARC Salon, and an Alfred Daniels Award from The Royal Society of British Artists 300th Exhibition. His work has appeared in several art publications and can be found in collections around the world.
