I sculpt in the Realist tradition. I graduated from the three year Florence Academy of Art program that focused on classical drawing techniques in charcoal and sculpting in the tradition of the older masters.
Prior to that I spent about 6 years attending various workshops world wide including many with Philippe Faraut and learning the essential skills. My heart was still craving the sculptures of the 15th century and I made the decision to train further in Florence.
The thought process prior to sculpting a portrait or figure I find the most creative aspect. How does the person see himself or herself? How do I view them? Then, chemistry happens whilst sculpting and getting to know the person.
I gravitate towards the essence of the person staying true to nature in what they offer me.
My other job as a doctor gives me a good insight into emotions at play and a sound understanding of anatomy. As a sculptor, anatomy is essential and it’s vital for me to understand the variations displayed in the subject before representing them. It’s always a struggle of how much to let go and how much to represent.
