The Florence Academy of Russian Art is a visual art academy located in Florence, Italy. The Academy teaches fundamental principals, methods and techniques of classical art, diligently transmitted over the centuries since the Italian Renaissance. The academic program provides thorough training in anatomy, composition, chromatics, perspective, painting, constructive drawing, sculpture and study of the works of Old Masters. The teaching method was born 300 years ago when Russian artists developed it, inspired mainly from Italian and French Masters from Renaissance and later periods. Various famous artists such as Repin, Surikov, Serov, Levitan, Vasnetsov and Kuindzhi have contributed to this method.

Our mission is to give an opportunity to study and refine traditional techniques of painting, drawing and composition, which will improve one’s confidence and strength of character necessary to become a professional artist of the highest caliber. Our passionate and highly skilled art professors are experts in the different subjects and techniques. They are prepared to guide the students through comprehensive art program while being sensitive to the needs and artistic talents of each student, whereby creating a well rounded and impeccable teaching method. Our goal is to help each individual student recognize her/his true potential as a professional artist and to provide a practical stepping-stone into the professional art world. Florence is the capital region of Tuscany, which is home to the masterpieces of art and architecture and the birthplace of Renaissance. Florence itself is an open art museum: it has more art per square meter than any other city in the world. In Florence you are in direct contact with works by many great Masters, such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli, all of who made their name in Florence. Among the many art galleries and museums there are the world famous Uffizi Gallery and Palazzo Pitti. All in all Florence offers spectacular surroundings for studying abroad with its cultural and historical elements combined with lively yet safe nightlife, designer fashion shops, street cafés, local markets and a limitless number of bars and restaurants.

Italy is considered to be one of the most beautiful countries in the world: it is a country with a unique combination of history and culture, world-famous cuisine, charming people and language, Mediterranean mentality, fashion and design and endlessly beautiful, versatile landscapes throughout the country. The artistic tradition of Italy is nearly as old as the country itself. Italy is the home country of Renaissance and many other artistic revolutions, and it has over 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites unlike any other country. Everywhere you go in Italy, you will be surrounded with spectacular architecture, elegant fashion and design, galleries, exhibitions, museums and churches filled with notable pieces of art. Italy is a particularly recommendable location for those who think about studying art abroad.

Our students' feedback

Laurence (Bordeaux, France):

"The freedom and creativity that the Florence Academy of Russian Art has encouraged is special, I would do three more years if I could. Teachers who pour themselves out and with such a knowledge they want to share with us students is also a valued experience."

Alessio (Melbourne, Australia):

“There is heavy emphasis on construction and anatomy, which is amazing because it gives you the ability to capture more of the essence of a person than you can through a photograph. It’s very comfortable to live here, with the immersive environment.”

Susan (California, USA)

“I came to Florence 8 years ago because it is a city that teaches traditional arts and crafts from the renaissance to present day. I was very inspired to come here. I attended another academy for three years, which taught me a lot about copying. I became very proficient at this but I never understood what I was doing. So I went to a lecture at the Russian school, I loved it because they taught what goes underneath the drawing.”

Our Curriculum

Students start painting and drawing from the beginning of the first year. The curriculum unfolds from the basic geometric shapes to still lives and casts, then to portraits and full body images by the end of the third year.

Our teachers supervise both painting in the morning and drawing session in the afternoon every day from Monday to Friday. Accompanied by English and Italian-speaking interpreters, they explain and demonstrate their methods to each student.

A full day each week is devoted to composition, which means creating and designing a full oil painting starting from an idea. Students work on term-long projects, going from initial abstract spot designs, through architecture, character and oil colour studies, before eventually producing a full-size drawing which can then be used as a basis for an oil painting.

Twice a year there is also an intensive Artistic Anatomy course, which is one of the corner stone subjects. The course gives essential knowledge about structure, proportions and features of human body. It teaches direct application of anatomy information to artistic drawing.
