Atelier

Watts Atelier of the Arts is located in the quiet beach town of Encinitas, CA, 30 miles north of San Diego. The Atelier was founded by Jeffrey R. Watts in 1992 as an intimate studio environment, and is now operated by Mr. Watts and a core of teachers trained at the atelier.

Modeled after the studio atelier of nineteenth century Europe, the Watts Atelier and it's staff believe that building a strong foundation of skills is the most important endeavor for any student. Much like an athlete or musician, the visual artist must continue to build their skills, and maintain them through diligent practice of the fundamental concepts of art. The staff of the Watts Atelier believe the path to prosperity in any field is paved with superior knowledge, a strong work ethic, and a clear focus of purpose. Students of varying age and skill levels, from novice to professional, are brought together to be taught in an environment of visual learning that is highly structured with a low student-to-teacher ratio.

The Watts Atelier now offers a rigorous online program, with over 400 hours of instructional video lessons from Jeffrey Watts and his team of core instructors. Starting with the basic fundamentals of drawing and painting, each new lesson builds on the concepts of the previous lesson, bringing the student's knowledge and skill base up step-by-step. New instructional video content is added every month to the online program, and students have the option of being mentored directly under one of the atelier's instructors or Jeffrey Watts himself. Students of all levels are welcome in both our online program and our in-house classes, and no portfolio review is required for enrollment.
