The plan would display modern art and store old masters paintings for years.

Half of the Gemäldegalerie’s entire collection of old masters paintings, one of Europe’s greatest, will be going into storage. A donated collection of 20th-century art will replace the 3,000 heritage works, a decision that is angering art historians and art lovers around the world.

Please call or write in your complaints to the museum.

New Article

August 17, 2012

Learn more about the winners of the 2011/2012 ARC Salon and their award winning works:

Excerpt below is about the Bouguereau Award Winner, David Gluck's, The Trapper.

This work mixes a Rembrandtesque color pallet and intense gaze with a sensitive suspense that is unique. The viewer has stumbled across a hunter who is sneaking about to set a trap for his intended prey.

The shotgun shells sticking out of his breast pocket and a trap in hand give the work a sinister feel. Yet the sinister quality is softened by a gentle touch, most likely communicated through the delicate choice in hand positioning, which instills this hardened man with a poetic flare.
Speaking of the inspiration for the painting, Gluck said: “When I knew him [the model], he didn’t have a job or a real home of his own, but he kept himself extremely busy collecting scrap metal. He was a modern-day forager.

At this time, too, I was rediscovering the Russian schools, and my new love for this type of art and my new acquaintance combined to create this painting. Here Brian is depicted as an early settler-trapper, a grizzled breed of man that lived with few material comforts and braved the harsh winters to seek a living from the woods.”

New Allied Organization - TRAC2012

August 14, 2012

There has been a neglect of critical appreciation of representational art well out of proportion to its quality and significance; it is that neglect that this conference seeks to address. By its nature, 21st century representational art is not to be thought of as simply a return to 19th century realism, but as an open-ended exploration. The conference is planned as a focused but non-doctrinaire event, of serious academic standards. What is the role of representational art in the twenty-first century? What are its sources and directions? How might it shape the art world?

Ravenswood Atelier was established in 2008 by two Florence Academy alumni and former instructors, Matthew and Magdalena Almy. The school offers a four-year apprenticeship program centered around the principles of academic training developed in the late 19th c., according to the teaching passed down to its founders in a direct master-to-student lineage dating back to the atelier of Jean-Léon Gérôme. Teachers paint alongside the students from the same model daily.
