Important Letters of George Frederick Watts
February 22, 2013
The National Portrait Gallery has been awarded £23,582 to fund the cataloguing of the papers and important letters of George Frederick Watts (1817-1904).
"The letters represent a broad cross-section of the artistic and social circles in which Watts moved. Many important Victorian figures are represented, including Matthew Arnold, Robert Browning, Julia Margaret Cameron, Thomas Carlyle, William Ewart Gladstone, Sir John Everett Millais, Cecil Rhodes, and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The shortest letters record appointments for sittings and social engagements. More detailed exchanges relate to the organisation of exhibitions of Watts’s work and his art practice."

It is intended for intermediate to advanced painters who already have a rudimentary knowledge and skill level in oil painting techniques and materials. New ARC Living Master™
February 8, 2013
Arantzazu Martinez is an academic painter from Vitoria, Spain. She attended the Fine Arts University of the Basque Country and graduated in 2000.
Unable to find any classical art training, she moved to New York. There she enrolled in the New York Academy of Figurative Art (NYAA) MFA program and graduated in 2002. It was during this same year that she met her mentor, Jacob Collins, the founder of the Water Street Atelier, the Hudson River Fellowship and The Grand Central Academy. To develop her training still further she studied under him at the Water Street Atelier from 2002 to 2005, where she completed her training following the nineteenth century academic method. The technical expertise, the considered compositions, the exceptional treatment of light and the human form are evident and much appreciated in Martinez's work. The symbiotic relationship of these elements creates imagery that evokes Romanticism and Symbolism. Her work has the ability to recreate a dream world where magic and fantasy are part of reality.
The quality of her work has been recognised internationally. She was commissioned by Lucasfilm Ltd. to take part in Star Wars Visions in 2009 and recently, she has taken part in the international art project "Image of Russia" 2012, representing her native country. Most of her artwork belongs to private collectors, but her paintings are starting to make their way into museums as well, and are now on view in the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), in Barcelona, Spain. New ARC Associate Living Master™
February 7, 2013
We would like to welcome Bryan Larsen to the ARC Website. Bryan has been drawing and painting since childhood. As a young person he was also fascinated with math and science and always found creative ways to mix the two worlds. After acquiring a strong foundation in art while studying illustration, and a greater appreciation for the sciences during mechanical engineering studies, he decided to take the plunge and return to his first love: fine art. Specifically, the kind of technically challenging and representational art that evokes in the viewer an appreciation for achievement, science, engineering, mathematics and contemporary architecture. Most of his work also has a figurative component and celebrates the beauty of the human form To view his new gallery on ARC click here. |
Additional Purchase award from the 2011/2012 ARC Salon
February 5, 2013
We would like to announce that the Art Renewal Center has purchased Julie Bell's painting, The Order of Wolves, which is an additional $15,000 purchase award. This painting won first place in the 2011/2012 International ARC Salon for the Animal Category, and is a wonderful addition to Art Renewal Center's Collection. The Order of Wolves is the first of hopefully many animal paintings to have won a purchase award in the ARC Salon.
Julie's work in the fantasy and science fiction field has appeared on hundreds of book covers, comic books, trading cards, and various collectibles. Every year, she and her husband, Boris Vallejo, produce paintings for the highly anticipated Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell Fantasy Calendar published by Workman, which is now in its 33rd year. After having her heart captured by a pack of wolves at Lakota Wolf Preserve a few years ago, Julie has turned her attention to painting wildlife. About The Order of Wolves Bell has said the following "On my first visit to a wolf sanctuary, I was treated to a scene that changed my way of seeing everything. It began when I heard a low, soft growl. Then I noticed the hairs on the backs of the wolves rising like a horse's mane as the wolves began their ancient ritual of bonding and marking their places in the pack. It all lasted only about 30 seconds, but in that half a minute, I felt like I experienced the entire concept of life and nature. This moment that I was so privileged to witness was like an introduction to my own animal being. The intimacy and sheer wildness of these wolves communicating with each other opened up new chambers in my mind. I knew that I had to paint that moment!" Look for the results of the 2012/2013 International ARC Salon in the late April. To view the winners of the 2011/2012 International ARC Salon, click here. |
