The Da Vinci Initiative, part of a 501C3, nonprofit, educational foundation, is a mission for visual literacy in our contemporary world. With a focus on K-12 public and private schools, the goal of this project is to provide skill-based learning in art education in order to deepen the understanding and applications of the visual language that surrounds us. The Da Vinci Initiative believes that art can be taught and that teaching skills enhances student creativity. Teaching realist based art skills such as those implemented by Da Vinci and Michelangelo not only aligns with current educational research that other subjects currently embrace, but it also enhances the number of choices students can make when creating their own work. Like teaching rhythm, tempo, and scales in music class so that a student has many tools to express themselves through music, so too is there a need for a skill-based education in the visual arts. By learning solid draftsmanship, color theory, paint handling skills, perspective, etc. students can expand their own toolbox for visual expression. The Da Vinci Initiative's aim is to enhance visual literacy for both teachers and students with the following programs: Classroom Resources: The Da Vinci Initiative is developing a series of educational videos and K-12 lesson plans. These lesson plans intend to both train teachers who may be unfamiliar with certain technical art skills, and provide a direct learning experience for K-12 students in art classrooms. These resources will be made available online for homeschooling parents as well as adults interested in learning skill-based art methods and techniques. Outreach: The Da Vinci Initiative will send ambassadors to teacher conferences to share with teachers about skill-based learning methods and expose them to lesson plans that will challenge their students in new ways. Professional Development: The Da Vinci Initiative will provide scholarship funds to teachers to attend courses that will teach them the advanced technical art skills they may not have had an opportunity to learn during their teacher training. Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art (LAAFA) Scholarships

| LAAFA will be giving scholarships to students accepted into their 3-Year Fine or Entertainment Art Program and 18-Month Foundational Track for Fall 2014. Scholarships are between $500 and $2000 annually and are based on both merit and need. LAAFA is looking for students who demonstrate a commitment in being immersed in the use of the figure as it pertains to representation in the fields of drawing, painting and entertainment art. Students must submit all required admissions documents and financial application for review. All scholarship rewards are applied quarterly to tuition only. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.80 to receive their scholarship benefits. | |

| With an approximate 2200 entries this year by over 1,000 artists, the 2013/2014 ARC Salon competition was more competitive then ever. This year we have accepted 685 finalists, which is the top 31% of works submitted. This year we have given out 14 purchase awards, the value of the paintings totaling over $140,000. The ARC Salon continues to grow every year with greater and more diversified publicity and a continual increase in the number of artists entering. Grand Central Academy Still Life Competition

 | The Grand Central Academy is holding a Still Life Competition from July 27 - August 1, 2014. Finalists will compete for 48 hours over 6 days to paint a still life. Participants will be allowed to bring a number of objects for their painting, but the judges will also unveil one or two objects that everyone must add to their composition. The GCA will provide easels, tabourets and identical still life set ups. Finalists are asked to bring their own painting materials and a set of still life objects. | The competition is open to all artists. | Born in 1972 in Moscow, Russia, Olga Rybakova learned how to paint in an art studio as a childhood. Rybakova drew nature in the open air and drew animals at the zoo winning an art competition while at school. After studying at an institute, she began working in the computer graphics industry. For 11 years Rybakova made backgrounds for games, characters, websites, 3D and 2D animation, works on TV, advertising, supervised the production of animated films, and organized a computer graphics studio. Then Rybakova decided that she did everything that she desired in the field of CGI, and wanted to move on to something new. | She started to study how to layer paint to add fullness and richness to her finished works and in 2000 did her first master copy.
