Final Five Works Added for Live ARC Salon

5 October, 2015

The final works have been added to the list of paintings to be exhibited in the traveling exhibition for the 2014/2015 ARC Salon.

Today we are adding ARC Living Master™ Donato Giancola's Second Place Imaginative Realism Winner, Conor Walton's Third Place Still Life Winner, the honorable mention in the Imaginative Realism Category by Dorian Vallejo, a Chairman's Choice Award Winner by Seth Haverkamp, and ARC Living Master™ Joseph McGurl's American Fine Art Magazine Award of Excellence Winner.
"Building upon the theme of 'painting between the lines' it was a thrill to create twelve images interpreting the world created by the writer George R.R. Martin and depicted in the HBO series A Games of Thrones. These twelve images would go on to become the 2015 calendar for A Song of Ice and Fire, the title of the literary series from which the HBO show is based on. The forging of the throne, an act frequently referred to within the novels, but never visualized, offered me an opportunity to delve into the narrative found in the novels regarding political power and to add a visual experience beyond just bringing lines of words to life."
- Donato Giancola

ARC Chairman on Vincent van Gogh

4 October, 2015

ARC Chairman Fred Ross recently wrote a response to a visitor's inquiry about ARC's Official view of van Gogh.

"Van Gogh is the one exception where we have included his work even though he's considered a post-impressionist like Cezanne and Matisse neither of whom we have on the ARC website.
Van Gogh was psychotic and much of his artwork is honestly attempting to capture how he viewed the world. Some of them are quite powerful. He was not trying to prove that the canvas is flat as were the other two artists and as were generations of modernists after them..."

The Florence Academy of Art’s Patrons and Artists Beaux Arts Ball

3 October, 2015

The Florence Academy of Art has organized a gala evening in New York City for friends and patrons. It will take place at the Cipriani, 25 Broadway, on November 6. The Beaux Arts Ball theme comes from the annual costume ball traditionally given by the students of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 19th century, so guests are invited to dress up as their favorite artist, patron or character from history. The gala will honor several individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts: in addition to Florence Academy Founder, Daniel Graves, the gala will honor Jacob Collins, fellow realist painter and founder of the Grand Central Atelier, Christopher Forbes, Vice Chairman of the Forbes Publishing company, Eric Rhoads, Chairman/Publisher Streamline Publishing, Inc. Judith Kudlow, patron and co-founder of the Harlem Studio School of Art, and painter, Stone Roberts. The evening will wrap up with the sale of a dozen special paintings from a few notable artists and a parade of costumes.
The gala is the academy's first fundraiser in New York. Proceeds will go towards the renovation of its newly purchased facility in Florence and its transformation into an international campus for realism.

Today we are adding an Honorable Mention in the Still Life Category by Richard Hall, two Honorable Mentions in the Drawing Category by Stephen Bauman and Albert Ramos Cortes, a Rehs Award Finalist by Lacey Lewis, a Knohl Collection Award by Christina Mastrangelo, and a Chairman's Choice Award by Theresa Elliot.

Minotaur (Part I)
by Albert Ramos Cortes
"Entering a labyrinth can be a deliberate choice. Often times it is a random event and it occurs every second of every day of everyone's life. This first part of my diptych 'Minotaur' depicts the former, the heroic act of crossing a new and unknown threshold knowing that one might get lost with a monster waiting patiently in the dark.

This painting is about me and also about you. It is about daily struggles and colossal endeavors. It is about honoring the most sacred of all the journeys: the journey to become a Hero. All my current work is about this one big journey, its challenges and the solutions to them."

- Albert Ramos Cortes

We have received a number of requests from artists who have been asked to participate in the live exhibition if we will provide an opportunity for them to sell their paintings. Because of this we have decided to do so. Many of the works on exhibit are also available for sale, a full list of these works can be found at the below link.

The Representational Art Conference 2015

3 October, 2015

November 1 - 4, 2015

Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach - 450 East Harbor Blvd., Ventura, CA 93001
The Representational Art Conference 2015 (TRAC2015) is the premier international art conference focused on the philosophical underpinnings of representational art in the 21st Century. This year TRAC will explore the roots and principles of representation as they emerge after postmodernity. What are its guiding principles? Are there aesthetic themes that connect works of representational art?

TRAC provides a platform for discussion. It does not aspire to establish a single monolithic aesthetic for representational art, but to identify commonalities, to help to understand the unique possibilities of representational art, and perhaps provide some illumination about future directions. ARC Chairman Frederick C. Ross will be a keynote speaker at this event on November 3rd.

Five New Works Added for Live ARC Salon

5 October, 2015

Five new works have been added to the list of paintings to be exhibited in the traveling exhibition for the 2014/2015 ARC Salon. The newest additions are Victoria Steel's First Place Drawing winner, an Honorable Mention in the Still Life Category by Vince Natale, an Honorable Mention in the Animal Category by Radoslav Kirilov Vasilev, Best Social Commentary Runner-Up by ARC Living Master™ Han Wu Shen and a Figurative finalist work by ARC Living Master™ Tony Pro.

"I was inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's original tale of The Little Mermaid. Most know the story to have a happy ending. However, in the classic tale, the heroine realizes that by the end of her allotted time on earth, she cannot get the prince to fall in love with her. Her sisters barter with the antagonist (the sea witch) and are given a dagger that the little mermaid must slay the prince with, which will allow the mermaid to live on. Instead of doing this, the mermaid throws herself into the water and dissolves into sea foam. Her new found soul does not fade, but rather becomes an air wraith that is promised to heaven. Anderson's tale paints the heroine as a more beautiful, more innocent soul- untouched by jealousy and emitting a love more pure than the will to survive. ..."

Sidney Lazarus: Fantastical and Visionary Works

3 October, 2015

October 29th through December 19th, 2015

Shepherd W & K Galleries
58 East 79th Street
New York, NY 10075

Catalog available at:
www.shepherdgallery.com

From October 29th through December 19th, 2015, the Shepherd W & K Galleries in New York City will be holding a one-man exhibition of the drawings of 20th century artist, Sidney Lazarus, entitled: Sidney Lazarus; Fantastical and Visionary Works.
This is the first exhibition of his work since his death in 1973. Sidney Lazarus is the uncle of ARC’s Editor-in-Chief, Sherry Lazarus Ross and Sherry has always considered her uncle one of the most important mentors of her youth. He died when she was twenty-three. She is delighted that his work will be on exhibit for this one-man show at the prestigious Shepherd Galleries. “I’m thrilled that the public will get to enjoy his unique vision, his private and imaginative world, his sense of playfulness mixed with dark humor. He was a fine poet too and well-read in philosophy. His work reflects this. It is poetic, satiric, philosophical, playful and often disturbing. He is uniquely himself, but one can see his love of Rembrandt, Goya, Daumier, Dore and Blake as well as other predecessors such as Odilon Redon, James Ensor, Felicien Rops, Alfred Kubin and Heinrich Kley. Sidney was mentored by Jean Charlot and he and my Aunt Sylvia were friends throughout their lives with Al Hirschfeld and Alexander King and their wives. I believe viewers will be pulled into his world, intrigued and delighted.”

"The very fact that a large part of our brain is all about emotion and communication is proof that connecting with others is a vital part of our survival. People have told me that when they look at my animal paintings, they feel like they are 'one of them.' They can truly identify. The tender but solid bond of these two lions in You and Me reminds me of myself and the love of my life, my husband, Boris; but also, in the more universal sense, You and Me represents you, the viewer, and me, the artist. I'm communicating with you on a subconscious level because we are this." – Julie Bell
We have received a number of requests from artists who have been asked to participate in the live exhibition if we will provide an opportunity for them to sell their paintings. Five New Additions to ARC Live Salon

5 October, 2015

Five new works have been added to the list of paintings to be exhibited in the traveling exhibition for the 2014/2015 ARC Salon. Today we are adding an Honorable Mention in the Landscape Category by George Bodine, and finalist in the landscape category by Ken Salaz, a Staff Award by Maureen Thompson, a finalist by ARC Living Master™ Joke Frima, and a finalist in the figurative category by ARC Living Master ™ Hsin-Yao Tseng.
Staff Award - Flight: Homage to Da Vinci
by Maureen Thompson
"Flight: Homage to Da Vinci, focuses on Leonardo's fascination with how birds fly and his studies of flying machines. In this painting I have represented Leonardo's aerial screw, a helical structure covered with linen cloth, a device that was designed to compress air to obtain flight. His sketches illustrate an aircraft that was 15 feet in diameter and was to be powered by four men that stood on a central platform. The falling feathers, represent a story of how he would buy caged birds at the market and release them, then take notes and make sketches of their flight. In the background is placed a leather-bound notebook, a constant companion, and further to the left, in the shadows, an empty birdcage. I tried to imagine his studio with the natural light from a high window illuminating his worktable filled with inventions, sketches and thoughts. My favorite Leonardo Da Vinci quote is, 'The noblest pleasure is the joy of understanding.'"

- Maureen Thompson
