Politics and Paint: Barbara Bodichon and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
Published on November 27, 2018
Pre-Raphaelite painter and women’s rights campaigner Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon (1827–1891) was an early female participant in the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Landscape was Bodichon’s preferred genre, and her style reflects Pre-Raphaelite principles of careful observation and detailed rendering. Bodichon traveled widely and exhibited at the Royal Academy and Gambart’s French Gallery in Pall Mall, London, among other venues.
Throughout her life she was a tireless reformer and champion of women’s rights. In 1858, she set up the English Women’s Journal and in 1866, with Emily Davies, developed a strategy to extend university education to women, resulting in the founding of Girton College, Cambridge.
Bodichon’s working process will be examined and feature watercolor sketches and drawings from her travels. The approximately 30 works are drawn from the Mark Samuels Lasner Collection at the University of Delaware and recent acquisitions in the Delaware Museum’s permanent collection.
The exhibition runs from November 3, 2018 - February 2, 2019 at the Delaware Museum of Art, 2301 Kentmere Pkwy, Wilmington Delaware, 19806.

New ARC Associate Living Master
Published on November 14, 2018
ARC is pleased to welcome Anni Crouter as our newest Associate Living Master™!
Born in Chicago, but growing up in Flint, Michigan, Anni Crouter started painting and drawing before she could read or write. Soon after relocating to Michigan in 1965, this natural ability caught the attention of her mother and both her grandmothers, who encouraged her to express herself. The life on a farm in rural Michigan with a father who was a veterinarian lent itself to many inspiring subjects to paint and draw such as horses, barn cats, dogs, birds and other wild and domesticated animals. Many of these subjects still remain her favorites to paint.

Power and Piety
Published on November 9, 2018
Power and Piety presents exquisite paintings, sculpture, silver pieces, furniture and decorative devotional objects made in the Spanish and Portuguese colonies of the Americas from the late 17th to the early 19th centuries.
Designed for use in churches, convents, monasteries and private homes, these objects were made by artisans from the Americas, but based on the iconographies, styles and methods of the European Renaissance. They attest to the tremendous interchange of cultures that occurred in the colonies, where craftsmen mixed native techniques and symbols with designs introduced by the Church and also absorbed influences from across the world.
The exhibition runs through December 9, 2018 at the Allentown Museum of Art 31 North Fifth Street Allentown, PA 18101.

The Higher Aim of Art: Lecture Series
Published on November 2, 2018
In their lifelong pursuit of figurative art, artists often focus on the "hows" of acquiring skills and knowledge, but not the "whys," "wheres" and "whats." "Why do you create?” “Where do you apply your skills?” "What images are vital to produce?” In this series of hour-long evening talks, internationally renowned figurative artists discuss personal creative philosophies in a thought-provoking conversation on professional practice.
Vincent Desiderio leads an intense conversation about inspiration, his own inventions and the nature of creating. His work can be found in many major collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Hirshorn Museum.
All presentations take place 6 - 8 p.m. in Studio Incamminati's fifth-floor studio, 340 North 12th Street, Suite 400, Philadelphia, PA 19107. The cost is $10.
ALL AREA ART STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND AT NO CHARGE. HOWEVER, THEY MUST REGISTER ONLINE AND DISPLAY A VALID STUDENT ID AT THE DOOR.
