Master to Master: The Nelson Shanks Collection

1 January, 2022

Sotheby’s recently presented the collection of Nelson Shanks, ARC Master, head of Studio Incamminati and portraitist to international leaders and celebrities. In addition to his own work, Shanks was renowned for his collection of Old Master paintings, sculpture, drawings, furniture, and decorative arts, all of which were offered in this exceptional sale. Highlights from the sale include a monumental masterpiece by Neapolitan artist Mattia Preti, with provenance dating back to its commission, a rare mature work by Guido Cagnacci, and a magnificent Venus by Dosso Dossi, which was thought to be lost until Shanks recognized it and acquired it.

Also being auctioned were Shanks's head studies for four commissioned portraits of Princess Diana, Luciano Pavarotti, Renée Fleming, and Presidents Reagan and Clinton. Shanks was beloved for his ability to capture the inner mood and personality of his sitters, whom he painted from life over many sittings, following painterly tradition dating back to the Renaissance.

The collection took place on January 27, 2022 at Sotheby's New York, and is still available to view on the Sotheby's website.

Miano Academy of Art Now Accepting Applications for the Apprenticeship Program

3 January, 2022

Miano Academy of Art is proud to present their apprenticeship program under the direction of ARC Associate Living Master Charles Miano, designed as a 4-level program with a completely unique 2-fold course of study. In addition to traditional long term projects such as casts, master copies, portraits and figurative works, the apprenticeship curriculum highlights rigorous short, intermediate and long practice from the live model. This balanced approach develops hand eye coordination quickly and improves an artist's ability to see and capture life and movement dramatically while at the same time learning to finish works of art to the highest standards of excellence.

Spaces are limited to provide one-on-one instruction and detailed attention, so students can thrive in their study no matter their entry level. Throughout the apprenticeship program, students may also attend workshops at Miano Academy of Art given by visiting master artists from around the world. the Apprenticeship is broken into trimester terms, for $3800 per term. Apprentices may benefit from having their own individual work area, teaching opportunities, public gallery representation, and a key to the Atelier studio, located in luminous Sarasota, Florida.

5 January, 2022

The Master of Arts in Studio Art is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The MA program consists of 30 credits of full-time study, entirely studio-based and completed over 3 summer sessions. Each summer session is 6 weeks in duration. Students may choose to complete all 3 summer sessions in person, or attend up to 2 out of the 3 summer sessions remotely. For those who study remotely, the required in-person session may take place at St. Peter’s University in Jersey City, or at the academy’s campus in Florence, Italy.

The Florence Academy of Art is delighted to partner with Mandy Theis and School of Atelier Arts to offer this degree program. With its emphasis on classical methods, the course provides training in drawing and painting to art teachers seeking to use these skill-based techniques in their classrooms, and to anyone interested in learning how to make realistic artwork. Candidates are not expected to come into the program with high levels of technical skill. Sargent, Whistler, and Venetian Glass: American Artists and the Magic of Murano

3 January, 2022

Sargent, Whistler, and Venetian Glass: American Artists and the Magic of Murano brings to life the Venetian glass revival of the late nineteenth century and the artistic experimentation the city inspired for visiting artists. It is the first comprehensive examination of American tourism, artmaking, and art collecting in Venice, revealing the glass furnaces and their new creative boom as a vibrant facet of the city's allure.

Sojourns in Venice were turning points for John Singer Sargent, James McNeill Whistler, and scores of artists who followed in their footsteps, often referencing the glass industry in their works. Featuring more than 140 objects, this exhibition presents a choice selection of glass vessels in conversation with paintings, watercolors, and prints by the many talented American artists who found inspiration in Venice.

The exhibition runs from October 8, 2021 - May 8, 2022 at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, 8th and G Streets, NW, Washington, DC 20004.

Alphonse Mucha - Art Nouveau Visionary

2 January, 2022

Czech-born Alphonse Mucha was one of the most celebrated artists in Paris at the turn of the 20th century. As an influential force behind the Art Nouveau movement, he created sumptuous posters and advertising—promoting such everyday products as cigarette papers and tea biscuits—that transformed the streets of Paris into open-air art exhibitions. "Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau Visionary" celebrates the Mucha Trust Collection’s first major U.S. tour in 20 years, featuring a vast array of posters, illustrations, ornamental objects, and rarely seen sculpture, photographs, and self-portraits. Additional works from the NCMA’s collection highlight the American interpretation of the European aesthetics that influenced Mucha as well as his close friendship with French sculptor Auguste Rodin.

The exhibition is being held at the North Carolina Museum of Art, 2110 Blue Ridge Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607 from October 23, 2021 - January 23, 2022.
