The Woman in White: Joanna Hiffernan and James McNeill Whistler
Published on August 12, 2022
Joanna Hiffernan’s close professional and personal relationship with artist James McNeill Whistler lasted more than two decades—yet who was she? She is featured in numerous works by Whistler, including his three famous “Symphony in White” paintings, which are being shown together for the first time in the United States.
While the intriguing “woman in white” has inspired artists from the Victorian era to today, little has been shared about Hiffernan and her influential role in Whistler’s life and work—until now.
On view from July 3 - October 10, 2022 at the National Gallery of Art, 6th St and Constitution Ave NW, Washington DC.

Published on August 11, 2022
September 26 - December 9
Taught remotely from the Florence campus
November 28 - December 9
In-person option in Florence
If you would like to write with mastery about figurative art, or simply further your knowledge of art history and the history of literature about art, this course will survey figurative art throughout the ages, while examining the techniques that literature has historically used to write about art.
Starting with the Ancient Greeks and Romans, progressing on to the Medieval period, the arrival of Humanism, the rediscovery of Classical forms, the establishment of the Academies during the Renaissance, and the role of the Academies through the Early Modern period, you will learn to analyze select works by their medium, composition, subject matter, and patronage, and to place them within the greater context of the long tradition of figurative art. By studying the rhetorical techniques that literature has historically used in writing about art, you will develop your writing skills through short weekly exercises, moving step-by-step from literary strategies to the organization and construction of a solid expository essay by the end of the course.
In-person Option: Students may experience the Florence Academy from within to understand how students train to become figurative painters and sculptors, while also touring the main museums, galleries, and churches of Florence, during the final 2 weeks of class.

Vive le Pastel! Pastel Painting from Vivien to La Tour
Published on August 3, 2022
Pastels enjoyed considerable popularity in the 18th century when many works were created, especially in France. But what are the reasons behind the technique’s blossom at the time, what advantages did pastels have over oil paintings, who had their portraits painted in pastel – and how exactly were pastels created?
The focus is on the collections’ own holdings, in which such important names as Joseph Vivien, Maurice Quentin de La Tour, Rosalba Carriera and Jean-Étienne Liotard are represented with individual works. In addition, some rarely displayed works by anonymous artists, as well as a few selected loans will also be exhibited. This unique combination of works makes it possible to compare artists and their approaches and invites visitors to discover the variety of different effects realized in these works.
The exhibition runs from May 5 - October 23, 2022 at the Alte Pinakothek, 27 Barer Str., Munich 80799, Germany.
