Forgotten Pre-Raphaelites
Published on September 28, 2022
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood revolutionized British painting traditions. But many more artists worked in their orbit than are often recognized. Overshadowed by famous peers, artists such as Barbara Bodichon, Marie Spartali Stillman, Alice Boyd, and Frederic Shields experimented with Pre-Raphaelite themes, subjects, and techniques. This exhibition brings together over forty works by such overlooked artists affiliated with the Pre-Raphaelite circle, including art by the American Pre-Raphaelites. Women were crucial to the Pre-Raphaelite movement and their work accounts for more than half of the objects on view. By featuring these lesser-known artists, the exhibition seeks to recover them from the margins of art history and position them at the center of the Pre-Raphaelite narrative.
The exhibition runs from October 1, 2022 - February 5, 2023 at the Delaware Museum of Art, 2301 Kentmere Pkwy, Wilmington, DE.

Cranach the Untamed
Published on September 22, 2022
This exhibition, conceived in collaboration with the Oskar Reinhart Collection “Am Römerholz” in Winterthur (Switzerland), is the first to explore the artistic beginnings of Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553). Cranach, a native of Franconia, produced his earliest extant works in Vienna, presumably arriving in the city around 1500. These works are celebrated for their remarkable expressive power – radically different from the courtly-elegant manner he was to adopt soon afterwards when he became court painter to the Elector of Saxony. Unlike the countless panels produced in his large workshop at Wittenberg, only a handful of paintings have survived from his sojourn in Vienna. Key works from this period are now in Winterthur and in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. Together with important loans from other collections, they form the core of the exhibition, offering a comprehensive survey of the early oeuvre of this outstanding artist.
The exhibition runs from 6/21 - 10/16/22 at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, 5 Burgring, Wien, 1010, Austria.

Writing for the Visual Arts - Florence Academy of Art
Published on September 20, 2022
September 26 - December 9
Taught remotely from the Florence campus
November 28 - December 9
In-person option in Florence
If you would like to write with mastery about figurative art, or simply further your knowledge of art history and the history of literature about art, this course will survey figurative art throughout the ages, while examining the techniques that literature has historically used to write about art.
Starting with the Ancient Greeks and Romans, progressing on to the Medieval period, the arrival of Humanism, the rediscovery of Classical forms, the establishment of the Academies during the Renaissance, and the role of the Academies through the Early Modern period, you will learn to analyze select works by their medium, composition, subject matter, and patronage, and to place them within the greater context of the long tradition of figurative art. By studying the rhetorical techniques that literature has historically used in writing about art, you will develop your writing skills through short weekly exercises, moving step-by-step from literary strategies to the organization and construction of a solid expository essay by the end of the course.
In-person Option: Students may experience the Florence Academy from within to understand how students train to become figurative painters and sculptors, while also touring the main museums, galleries, and churches of Florence, during the final 2 weeks of class.

Füssli, between dream and fantasy
Published on September 15, 2022
Approximately sixty works by Johann Heinrich Füssli (better known as Henry Fuseli), artist of the imaginary, grotesque, and the sublime, will be on view in Paris in the first monographic exhibition of his art since 1975.
From Shakespearean subjects to representations of dreams, nightmares and apparitions, as well as mythological and biblical illustrations, he developed a new aesthetic that oscillated between dream and fantasy. An atypical and intellectual artist, he drew his inspiration from various literary works. Fueled by an imagination where terror and horror marry, he created in his painting the origins of dark romantic aesthetic, where the marvelous and the fantastic, the sublime and the grotesque constantly rub shoulders.
The exhibition runs from September 16, 2022 - January 23, 2023 at Jacquemart-Andre Museum, 158 Bd Haussmann, Paris, 75008 France.

Murillo: From Heaven to Earth
Published on September 14, 2022
This exhibition is the largest gathering of Murillo’s paintings in the United States in 20 years.
While Spanish Golden Age painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo is primarily known for his representations of the life of Christ and other Biblical scenes, "Murillo: From Heaven to Earth" focuses on his earthly depictions of secular subjects and everyday life in seventeenth-century Seville. The landmark exhibition features 50 paintings drawn from the Musée du Louvre, the National Gallery of Art, the Hispanic Society, and more.
For the first time in modern history, ordinary people—beggars, street urchins, and flower girls—are cast as the main characters of the cultural narratives and written tales of Murillo's time. Experience the artist’s masterful blending of the sacred and the secular, the earthly and the divine—only on view at the Kimbell Art Museum, 3333 Camp Bowie Blvd, Fort Worth, TX 76107.
