Botticelli Drawings

2 December, 2023

Botticelli Drawings is the first exhibition ever dedicated to the drawings of Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. Exploring the foundational role drawing played in Botticelli’s work, the exhibition traces his artistic journey, from studying under maestro Fra Filippo Lippi to leading his own workshop in Florence. Featuring rarely seen and newly attributed works, the exhibition provides insight into the design practice of an artist whose name is synonymous with the Italian Renaissance. Botticelli’s drawings offer an intimate look into the making of some of his most memorable masterpieces, including Adoration of the Magi, which will be reunited with its preparatory drawing, surviving only in fragments. From Botticelli’s earliest recorded drawings through expressive designs for his final painting, the works on display reveal the artist’s experimental drawing techniques, quest for ideal beauty, and command of the line.

The exhibition runs from November 19, 2023 – February 11, 2024 at the Legion of Honor, 100 34th Ave San Francisco CA 94121.

Camille Claudel

2 December, 2023

The trailblazing French sculptor Camille Claudel defied the social expectations of her time to pursue original and powerful explorations of the human form.

This exhibition is the first comprehensive display of Claudel’s work in the United States in over 20 years and marks the 130th anniversary of the first public presentation of her sculpture in this country—at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Featuring some 60 sculptures from more than 30 institutional and private lenders, the presentation gathers her key compositions, showcasing her remarkable technical ability and innovative creations across multiple genres and materials.

Claudel’s sculptures contend with universal themes of love, loss, passion, and the intimacy of daily experience; they embody the artist’s uncompromising pursuit of stylistic and professional independence. Her genius and sensibility are so thoroughly modern that her works continue to resonate, perhaps even more loudly today than during her tumultuous life.

The exhibition runs from October 7, 2023 – February 19, 2024 at The Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60603.

New ARC Associate Living Master℠

3 December, 2023

ARC is pleased to welcome Mark Harrison as an ARC Associate Living Master℠!

Mark Harrison studied illustration in a UK art college from 1970-74.  He has worked mainly in publishing as a freelance illustrator from 1974-2002, painting 484 book jacket covers for UK and USA publishers.

In 2005, he stopped working in illustration to focus on his personal work and exhibited in many galleries and juried shows. A chance meeting in 2013 led Mark to regularly exhibit his work at the Illuxcon (now IX) art fair held annually in Reading, PA. This led to him painting many works in the Imaginative Realism category alongside his work as a fine art landscape/cityscape painter.

He can be found listed in the Dictionary of 20th Century British Illustrators published by The Antique Collectors Club and an entry in Who's Who In Art published by The Morven Press in the UK.
