Diana Scultori: An Engraver in Renaissance Rome
Published on March 22, 2024
Diana Scultori (1547–1612), also known as Diana Mantuana, was the first documented woman in Europe to have a professional career as a printmaker. Born in the Italian city of Mantua, Diana came from a family of artists with professional connections to the local court. Diana was eventually drawn to Rome, where ambitious printmakers went to make their fortunes. Like many printmakers in this period, she specialized in engraving renditions of paintings, drawings, and sculptures by other artists, which required the creativity and technical acumen needed to translate an image from one medium to another. Placing her work in dialogue with other printmakers in her orbit, this exhibition highlights Diana’s contributions to the dynamic world of printmaking in late-1500s Rome.
The exhibition runs from January 27 – July 7, 2024 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19130.

Frederick Brosen: Recent Watercolors
Published on March 19, 2024
For the artist’s seventh solo show with Hirschl & Adler Modern, ARC Associate Living Master Frederick Brosen continues his career-long celebration of New York while also turning his gaze to the postcard-worthy shores of Provincetown, Massachusetts. In twelve new watercolors, two seemingly disparate landscapes are united by the artist’s masterful touch. Although Provincetown’s population of 3,000 is miniscule in comparison to New York’s overwhelming population of 8.5 million, Brosen renders these two distinct locations with the same sense of placidity and intimacy.
The exhibition takes place at Hirschl & Adler, The Fuller Building, 41 E. 57th Street, 9th Floor, NY 10022 from March 14 – April 12, 2024.

Pre-Raphaelites: Modern Renaissance
Published on March 15, 2024
Pre-Raphaelites: Modern Renaissance chronicles three generations of Pre-Raphaelites, a movement formed in 1848 by seven rebellious young men determined to reinvigorate art in Victorian England. Resolved to capture the passion and authenticity conveyed by medieval and Renaissance Italian artists who worked before the death of Raphael (1520), the Pre-Raphaelites re-envisioned styles and themes from the past in decidedly modern ways.
Over 350 artworks by Italian masters ranging such as Cimabue, Daddi, Botticelli, Angelico, Gozzoli, Lippi, Della Robbia, Verrocchio, Michelangelo, Veronese and Reni – juxtaposed with major works by British artists including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt, John Ruskin, Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, Elizabeth Siddal, Frederic Leighton, G F Watts, Simeon Solomon, Evelyn De Morgan and J W Waterhouse are on display.
The exhibition runs from 2/24-6/30/24 at San Domenico Museum, 12 P.le Guido da Montefeltro, Forlì, 47121 Italy.

Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature
Published on March 6, 2024
Beloved children’s book author and illustrator Beatrix Potter (1866–1943) rooted her fiction in the natural world. Childhood summers spent in Scotland and the English Lake District nourished Potter’s love of nature, while her famous menagerie of pets inspired her picture letters and published tales. Her study of botany and mycology established an abiding interest in the life sciences, a passion she would bring to rural life at Hill Top Farm in Cumbria, England. There, she enjoyed a second act as a sheep breeder and land conservationist, ultimately bequeathing four thousand acres of farmland to the National Trust.
Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature brings together artwork, books, manuscripts, and artifacts that trace how Potter’s innovative blend of scientific observation and imaginative storytelling shaped some of the world’s most popular children’s books.
The exhibition runs from February 23 – June 9, 2024 at the Morgan Library 225 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10016.
