The student learns the traditional structure of a painting's composition
and the technical underpainting/ overpainting procedures used by the
great portrait masters of the past.
Every aspect of this course is under the guidance of Mr Angel and the
course is taught by our instructors.

You will also receive various handouts that encapsulate the correct
methods of using oil paint. These send-outs explain the different
grounds, materials and mediums used in oil painting and also describe
the various layers used in traditional underpainting-overpainting
techniques.

There will be copies made from paintings and there will be work from
photos to begin the students understanding of the application of these
formal principles. The portrait-painting intensive course is set out as
follows:
Week 1 and 2: Painted studies of 3 masks progressing from more geometric
and planar to more naturalistic.
The student begins with sight-size work from skin-coloured casts:
first, a planar head; second, a mannequin head; and, finally, a cast
from life. These three studies are followed by value-study and
colour-study exercises to understand the basic design principles used in
portrait painting.
Week 3 and 4: Master copy of a portrait in black and white followed by a
larger portrait in color from photographic references.
The student progresses to designing a portrait from a photo provided by
the academy; this design is then made into a finished painting, roughly
70x50cm.

The student's class commitment includes 30 hours per week of full
instruction; each student receives at least one critique in the morning
and one critique in the afternoon from the course instructors, as well
as advice during the day. All levels are accepted.

The student is awarded a Certificate on completion of the Four-Week
Intensive Course. The final Certificate does not have the legal value
of study qualifications issued by equalized or legally recognized
Italian state schools.
