At LARA, we are making art history. Now we are teaching it too. Drink wine and talk art with us! 11th January - 22nd March 2019 (excluding 15th February)
Whether you are a seasoned art historian, a practising artist, or don’t know an oil painting from a performance piece, these relaxed sessions will allow you to learn about specific artworks and, more generally, to develop skills for becoming a more engaged spectator of art. While all are welcome, the sessions may be of particular interest to artists, as we will discuss how to apply the rich bank of ideas and techniques that art history provides us with to our own practices.
The classes will be tutor-led seminars in which together we will conduct comparative analyses of various artworks grouped by a different theme each week. Comparative analysis is classic method pioneered by Heinrich Wölfflin, which simply means comparing two artworks. It encourages a more critical approach than viewing works on their own, and is ideal for putting art in context in a manageable way.
