I'm with you. I go to opague color straight away. So does R. Schmid, Dan Gerhartz and Morgan Weistling, Anders Zorn, John Singer Sargent and J. Sorolla. I feel this method (grisaille) is best for students and should be grown out of. Values and chroma are mixed in nature. Why seperate the color in art? I think it is a stall tactic myself.
