Oh, I know half the readers here will disagree, and for every good painter I list you guys on the green/grey team can supply an equal list. I personally just side with the direct method. This is my simple reason:

Life and nature present: chroma, hue, value, edges, temperature, drawing, light, & composition? as one unit mixed and complex. This is how we all see our subjects. I paint what I see (mostly) as did Sargent, Sorolla and as does Dan Gerhartz - speak with him and he'll say as much. We just see it and paint as we see it in all it's complexity. I see too many painters that break the subject down into essential parts and never quite are able to put them all back together again. The re-assembled parts ring of artifice - not nature.
