Color Field painters came after the abstract expressionists, late 1950's 1960's (there is a resurrection of psuedo color field going now on the west coast of USA I've heard). They made large canvases of single or imperceptibly shifted hues. Morris Louis, Ellsowrth Kelley and Helen Frankenthaler. If I remember my art history right, it was the logical extension of purifying art of illusion. 2-Dimensions, monumental size, pure color, no shapes. Part of the long final slide to the dead end wasteland of artistic nihilism that is modernism.
