I hate to jump in here between you two, but I think the darker colors (more intensity & more chromatic) tend to be those that are glazed with most often historically. I hardly ever see a light & opaque (whitish) wash done that doesn't look like whitish wash. I dislike being able to read devices so plainly. I think it is most often the darks (but not exculsively) that are used for this.
