That was my own. I was asked for an "artist's statement" to go in an exhibition catalogue for a show in which I had won the People's Choice award with my pastel self-portrait, the one you have, back in 1987, and that was what I gave them. The competition was the Artists' Society International exhibition, held at the Palace of Fine Arts, in San Francisco. The judges favored modernist stuff, but the voting public liked my picture better, which pleased me very much. My quote was pertinent to that.
