I believe [Helmantel] said sometime in an interview that he couldn't get the figurative paintings as good as he wanted so he decided to go on with still lifes and interiors, where he does feel himself a good painter.

Still lifes are easier than figurative paintings. There are many painters who can do still life well, but who cannot do people well. Landscapes likewise.

I was taught, long ago, that an artist should master them all before settling on a specialty.
