Sargent on Gauguin

From ARC Staff

Published before 2005

Sargent lived to see the interest in these guys bloom. He went to an exhibit and his reactions were written down by friends. When looking at the Gauguins he said honestly; "His color is pretty good, I wonder why he never learned to draw?"

He (JSS) did not for one minute believe that there was any magic to crudeness, or simply inability - he also simply wondered why someone aiming to be a professional did not acquire the requisite skills.
