Virgil Elliott: It took me two weeks to execute the large painting, beginning by drawing in charcoal on a canvas primed with white lead.

Mark: Only two weeks? That ain't bad for a painting that size! I'm even more impressed!

The concept being essence of masculinity, I felt it was most appropriate to paint it boldly with big brushes, directly, in full color. I can paint pretty fast with big brushes and a big palette, with large quantities of paint on it. On a picture like that, it wouldn't do to pussyfoot around with no sissy little girlie brushes.
