This post jarred a memory of a William Zorach story - Zorach BTW was a very good direct carver of the 20th century:

Jonny had wise thoughts for a little boy of ten. I took him to the museum of modern art.

He looked at the pictures very carefully and said, "Do you know what is next Grandpa? People are going to go into a room with nothing but empty walls and imagine pictures."
