Big Sur is one of the most powerfully beautiful places to paint in America. The color, variety of textures, and the sound of both wind and waves add richness and depth to any painting experience. Selected for the 110th California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition at the Hilbert Museum.
The role of greys and neutrals is significant in this work, as I intended that the color of the foliage and ocean water would be paramount, and be "lifted out" against the colors of the background and sand. The Big Sur coast appears to be jewel-like, I believe, due to the contrast of brilliant-versus-less-intense colors.
