DUKE OF GLOUCESTER STREET FROM KING’S ARMS TAVERN, oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in.

This was one of three paintings depicting scenes from Duke of Gloucester Street which were commissioned by a client.  This particular scene is during the winter with bright winter light, stark shadow contrasts and bare trees.   The view is looking Westward along Duke of Gloucester Street back toward the Merchants Square area.  The original King’s Arms Tavern was opened in 1772 by Jane Vobe and it hosted the business and political leaders of Colonial-era Virginia.   Today’s tavern is one of several operated by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation which are open to the public, serving traditional meals by a staff wearing Colonial costumes.
