The meeting of abstraction and realism is of significance to me in every painting I create. I believe that it is through abstraction that I can inspire emotion in the viewer, to paint just enough "fact" in appearances to convey an authentic sensation of place. This river in Colorado, as seen through the windows of the Durango-Silverton train, was an ideal subject for this approach.
There is a smaller-scale train that wends its way through the forest from Durango to Silverton, climbing on bridges through the trees and alongside the Animas River. The colorful rocks and active water drew me to the river's side of the train, to draw and take photo reference. In the studio, I remembered the coolness and remote peace of this place.
