Drove up to the highest ridge in my hometown of San Clemente to set up my kit for nocturnal painting, and set up my lamp. Far below was the Interstate and downtown, with lights twinkling in town, and high beams glowing on the freeway. My subject, I decided, was hope, the light that banishes darkness. Abstraction plays a major role in creating mood.

A plein air session atop one of the highest ridges in San Clemente enabled me to see Catalina Island and the channel stretching out and away from the city's lights. One may see the golden lights of the pier at the coastal edge of the town, and the bright freeway lamps cruising alongside the darker neighborhoods and city streets. I particularly like this piece for its abstract, emotion-evoking qualities.
