At the close of a day after plein air painting, I noticed that the valley in which I was painting began to turn red, with warm greens and gold accents. Lights came on in the distant town, and the definition of the word "home" seemed to be written before me in colors, textures and shapes. I went home to paint it.
I greatly admire the the work of the Tonalists, with their concentration on atmosphere and value due to the use of a limited palette. This approach was perfectly suited to an assignment to myself to create a painting about what "home" means.
