The Detroit Realists of Art opened in 2022 and is the first and only classical atelier in Michigan. We specialize in the classical atelier programs that one will find at the Florence Academy of Art or the Ravenswood Atelier in Chicago.

Both instructors and founders of the school have an extensive background in their training and professional careers. Brian School studied at American Academy of Art in Chicago, with Grigor Eftimov at Atelier Eftimov, The Palette and chisel, and with Matt and Magda Almy at the Ravenswood Atelier. Richard Seaman studied at CCS in Detroit, the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, and the Ravenswood Atelier.

Our program takes the student through the Bargue course, they also study the nude model every day, and work through plaster casts until reaching the painting program where they start with a limited palette and work their way up to full color. Along the way anatomy and perspective is covered until the students reach the advanced program where their study turns to a focus of their choosing. Our program is based in tradition but is also designed to adapt to the needs of the student. Every person has their own strengths and weaknesses and we shift the programs emphasis where needed to fill the gaps where a student might need more focus.
