Miano Academy of Art

A Living Tradition of Representational Art

Founded in 2007 by artist and educator Charles Miano, Miano Academy of Art is a nonprofit atelier in Sarasota, Florida, dedicated to preserving and advancing the traditions of representational and narrative art through rigorous apprenticeship, individual mentorship, and the sustained study of nature.

At the heart of the Academy is a simple belief: becoming an artist requires time. Knowledge is passed from artist to artist through demonstration, observation, practice, correction, and years of dedicated work. In an age increasingly shaped by speed, technology, and artificial intelligence, Miano Academy remains committed to the deeply human work of developing the eye, the hand, and the imagination.

The Atelier Apprenticeship
The Academy's principal program is its multi-year Atelier Apprenticeship, an intensive course of study in drawing and painting designed to develop artists from foundational skills toward advanced study and mastery.

Students come to Miano Academy at different stages of life and experience, united by the desire to take their artistic development seriously. Whether beginning a life in art or returning to a long-held artistic ambition, apprentices enter a structured path of study grounded in drawing, painting, and the observation of nature.

The curriculum progresses through four primary levels, beginning with foundational drawing and advancing into the study of oil painting. Upon completion of the four-level certificate program, apprentices may continue into Level Five, an advanced year of specialized study that allows them to deepen their training and pursue more ambitious work under continued mentorship.

Drawing forms the foundation of the program. Students develop an understanding of proportion, gesture, anatomy, value, form, composition, and light before progressing into the complexities of painting and color.

The live model remains central to the education. Through short studies, sustained poses, portraiture, and figurative work, apprentices learn not merely to reproduce appearances, but to understand movement, structure, character, and the living presence of the subject.

Learning to See
Central to the Academy's philosophy is the study of light.

In figure drawing and painting, particular emphasis is placed on gesture, movement, and life. Anatomy and structure provide the foundation, but students are taught to look beyond the static figure toward the rhythms, action, and presence that give the subject vitality.

As students advance, they are introduced to narrative art, drawing upon the great tradition of visual storytelling to explore how the figure, composition, gesture, atmosphere, and symbolism can communicate meaning and tell a story.

Overarching these principles is the Academy's pursuit of light. Students learn to use light not only to reveal form, but to create atmosphere, focus, beauty, and meaning. Technical skill is not treated as an end in itself, but as a language through which observation, imagination, and ideas can be expressed.

Apprenticeship and Mentorship
Miano Academy deliberately maintains a focused apprenticeship environment so that students receive sustained individual attention. Rather than approaching education as a succession of unrelated classes, the Academy emphasizes continuity between teacher and student.

Faculty work closely with apprentices over an extended period, allowing instruction to respond to the particular strengths, challenges, temperament, and artistic aspirations of each student.

This relationship reflects an older model of artistic education: knowledge carried from one generation of artists to the next. The aim is not simply to produce technically accomplished drawings and paintings, but to develop thoughtful, capable artists through sustained practice and mentorship.

Tradition as a Living Practice
Miano Academy does not regard tradition as something fixed in the past.

The great inheritance of representational art provides artists with a visual language developed over centuries, but each generation must learn to speak through that language for itself.

For this reason, the Academy joins disciplined craftsmanship with imagination. Its purpose is preservation through practice: to safeguard valuable artistic knowledge by teaching it, using it, and ultimately passing it forward.

The Academy's apprentices, alumni, and faculty form part of that continuing lineage.

A living tradition, carried from one generation of artists to the next.
