The Scottish School of Classical Art is deeply committed to supporting students of all skill levels in achieving their artistic goals. Our program offers a range of study options, including part-time, full-time, evening, and short- and long-term courses and workshops. Our core program is divided into three levels, each comprising a series of studies that can be completed at the student's own pace with the support of one-on-one critiques. Our adaptable teaching method allows us to accommodate different schedules and needs, ensuring that all students receive the highest quality instruction.

Through our program, students learn to represent the human figure using a range of complex concepts and methods, including gesture, design, hue, chroma, value, and anatomy. They begin by working with materials such as graphite and charcoal and eventually progress to using full color palettes in oil paint. Our constructive approach to drawing, which involves comparative measurement and sight-size techniques, helps students develop the skills and knowledge needed to create believable visual impressions of the figure without relying heavily on the model. By providing manageable steps and a flexible tuition schedule, we empower our students to become expert problem solvers and masters of their craft.

Michael Doherty

Director

Michael is a contemporary representational artist, his works range in subject; figurative, portraits, and still-lifes. Michael has studied and taught representational painting for 10 years in four schools, his works have also exhibited across the UK. Starting his training at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, Michael gained his first year degree in Painting and then left to continue studying at Duncan of Jordanstone, College of Art and Design at Dundee University, where he gained his degree in Fine Art. He continued his academic drawing education at the Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art, working with the faculty in Glasgow while establishing The Scottish School of Classical Art. Michael, whilst at University, studied with numerous private tutors trained in Florence, the US and Rome. Michael studied anatomy at the Florence Classical Arts Academy - a school which bases it’s teaching method on the Russian Academic tradition. He started teaching privately during University, and continued through his academic career, starting a private studio in 2018. Over the course of ten years, teaching and studying art academically, he has been influenced greatly by the ethos of the Old Masters, and the greats of American and British illustrators. Michael J. Doherty founded the Scottish School of Classical art in 2018 with a handful of students in a small studio in the East End of Glasgow. He has given lectures, talks, courses and workshops at various art schools and private clubs. Michael has a profound belief in continuously gaining new knowledge to perfect his craft, this gives an excellent foundation for building lasting student-mentor relationships. Michael’s work is shown throughout the UK and in numerous private collections, he has shown at the Royal Scottish Academy among other prestigious galleries.
